05 - Not for Profit FASB Update

Speaker: Jeff Mechanik, CSP, CPA – Assistant Director, FASB

Description: FASB issued an update to Topic 958, “Clarifying the Scope of the Accounting Guidance for Contributions Received and Contributions Made” to clarify how nonprofits determine whether a resource provider is participating in an exchange transaction vs. providing a contribution. Understanding how the new guidance affects revenue recognition is critical for all nonprofit organizations. In this session, we will review the key points of this update, including the scope and transition approaches. We will walk through several examples of the treatment of grants and pledges under the new standard, and will explore the accounting for specific transactions in the year of implementation and beyond. We will review risks associated with the implementation of the new standard, internal control considerations and disclosure requirements. Finally, we will discuss best practices for implementation, including audit readiness.
