Here’s one more reason to find that elusive work-life balance: A new study by Deloitte and Harris Interactive found that 91 percent of employed adults believe workers are more likely to behave ethically if they have a healthy work-life balance.
“When you think about it,” said Deloitte & Touche USA Chair Sharon Allen, “if someone invests all of their time and energy into their jobs, it may have the unintended consequence of making them dependent on their jobs for everything — including their sense of personal worth. This makes it even harder to make a good choice when faced with an ethical dilemma if they believe it will impact their professional success. … In order to encourage high ethical standards within our organizations, we first have to provide an environment that is conducive to ethical behavior. ”
Deloitte apparently is taking that philosophy to heart. In an interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Chief of Staff Bob Rosone said the firm’s motto is “fitting your work into your life and your life into your work,” and he cited the firm’s decision to allow employees to take off up to five years for “personal pursuits” as proof.
