A large portion of Jim Astrachan's practice is devoted to representing people all over the country who are involved in the creative process -- including advertising agencies, advertisers, software developers, publishers and architects--and to prosecuting or defending copyright, trademark, trade secret and unfair competition cases. He is admitted in Maryland, the District of Columbia and the Northern District of Texas.
Jim is a graduate of the University of Baltimore School of Law (1974) and the Georgetown University Law School with a LL.M in taxation (1978). He lectures frequently on intellectual property law subjects and for several years wrote the Legal Briefing column for ADWEEK magazine on the legal issues confronting advertising agencies and advertisers. He has been editor of the Legal Advice⢠newsletter, a national subscription newsletter for the advertising industry and he writes Legal Advice, a monthly column for The Daily Record on intellectual property and advertising law subjects. He is the author of the Copyright, Trademark, Advertising and Advertising Agency Sales Tax Primers. He is also the author of the 4 volume seminal legal treatise, The Law of Advertising, published by Lexis-Nexis/matthew Bender.
Jim is the former Chair of the Intellectual Property Committee of the Maryland State Bar Association. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland School of Law where he teaches Trademark and Unfair Competition Law and at the University of Baltimore Law School where he teaches Intellectual Property and Mass Communications.
Jim is a member of the board of directors of, and general counsel to, the Advertising Association of Baltimore and counsel to the Maryland-District of Columbia-Delaware Broadcasters' Association. He has received the Crystal Prism Award from the American Advertising Federation for special contribution to the advertising industry. Jim is the chair of the Advisory Committee for the University of Baltimore Graduate School of Publication Design (1998- ). He is a co-author of the Maryland Institute for the Continuing Professional Education of Lawyers (MICPEL) course on Intellectual Property, including trademark, copyright and advertising law (1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, and 1999). Jim served on the Executive Committee of the Bar Association of Baltimore City (2001-2002) and currently is a member of the Peer Review Committee, part of the Maryland Bar Attorney Association Grievance Committee. Jim was voted one of Baltimore's top lawyers in Baltimore Magazine in both 1995 and 1998.
Jim actually wrote his bio, and refused to make fun of himself while all the while assuring the Firm's lawyers that he could take the ribbing.
