BALTIMORE, May, 15, 2009 -- Mark W. Olson, chair of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, will attend the swearing-in of new Maryland CPAs on June 16.
The event will be held on June 16 following Day 1 of the MACPA's annual Maryland Business and Accounting Expo at the Baltimore Convention Center.
Olson was named PCAOB chair in July 2006, overseeing a board created by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act to protect investors by overseeing the auditors of public companies.
Before that, he was a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors and the Federal Open Market Committee. He also represented the Federal Reserve on the Board of the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation, which was created by Congress to provide support for community-based revitalization efforts.
Olson also has served as staff director of the Securities Subcommittee of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs. The subcommittee's legislative jurisdiction included the Securities and Exchange Commission and accounting, securities and insurance policy issue.
Held each June as part of the MACPA's Expo, the swearing-in ceremony honors Maryland's newest CPAs and is a reminder of the trust the public places in CPAs -- and the responsibility that accompanies that trust.
The oath demonstrates their obligation to protect the public interest and adhere to the profession's code of conduct and state laws and regulations.
