Area Post Offices announce April 15 hours

BALTIMORE, April 14, 2009 — If you’re one of the millions of taxpayers who owes Uncle Sam a few dollars on your 2008 tax return, chances are you will visit your local Post Office in the coming days. While the number of people filing online has increased over the years, many Americans still prefer to mail their tax returns.

Due to rising costs of operations, Post Offices in the Baltimore District will offer normal full-service window operations on Tax Day, Wednesday, April 15.

The only office with extended hours will be the Baltimore Main Post Office at 900 East Fayette St. They will be open to serve customers from 8:30 a.m. to 12 midnight.

Customers can call 1-800-ASK-USPS (800-275-8777) or visit usps.com for information on the nearest Post Office’s retail hours and collection service.

To help accommodate last-minute tax filers, the U.S. Postal offers these tips:

  • Apply sufficient postage (42-cents for the first ounce -17-cents postage for each additional ounce).
  • Always use a complete mailing and return address.
  • Tax returns must be postmarked no later than April 15.
  • If mailing from a street collection box, check the last pick-up time to make sure your return will be collected that day. The latest collection time in the Baltimore District will be 12 midnight at the Main Post Office, 900 East Fayette St.
  • Consider using Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation if you want to confirm your tax return is delivered. Delivery Confirmation is not available for first-class envelopes.
  • If using a first-class envelope, use Certified Mail or Registered Mail for proof of delivery.

D.C. Post Offices announce extended hours

WASHINGTON -- The Postal Service is providing extended retail hours in and around the District of Columbia on Wednesday, April 15. This will ensure last-minute federal tax filers receive the April 15 postmark on their returns.

Customers can also call 1-800-ASK-USPS (800-275-8777) for the nearest Post Office with extended retail and collection service.

Washington, D.C. Post Offices' hours

  • Friendship Station, 4005 Wisconsin Ave. NW, WDC 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • National Capital Station, 2 Massachusetts Ave. NE, WDC 7:30 a.m. to midnight

Maryland Post Offices' hours

  • Hampton Park Post Office, 9201 Edgeworth Drive, Capital Heights, Md., 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Suburban Plant Finance, 160501 Shady Grove Road, Gaithersburg, Md., 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Customers are encouraged to mail their tax returns as early in the day as possible. Postal officials suggest customers weigh their returns or extension requests on a postal scale to calculate the proper amount of postage. This is especially true if a customer is filing extra forms or schedules. Tax agencies will NOT pay postage due, so short-paid filings will be returned to the sender for additional postage.

Customers mailing tax deadline packages weighing 16 ounces or more, and bearing postage in the form of postage stamps must mail these packages at a postal retail window. Tax filers should double-check the pickup schedule if they elect to use a street side collection box to ensure their tax documents will be collected and postmarked before the deadline.

Every tax filing will receive an official April 15 postmark if it is properly prepared and deposited by the designated cut-off time.
