New CPAs take oath to protect the public
Second annual event honors 78 new licensees
The CPA oath
“I solemnly swear that I will assume the responsibilities and obligations as a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Maryland and in the United States of America.
“I will support the laws and regulations and perform my professional duties to the best of my ability in an ethical, professional and objective manner.
“As a CPA, I will uphold the honor and dignity of the accounting profession and abide by the rules of professional conduct.”
Ethics, integrity and the public trust took center stage on June 17 when 78 of Maryland's newest CPAs were officially sworn into the profession.
The event took place at Baltimore Convention Center following Day 1 of the inaugurual Maryland Business and Accounting Expo. Stanley Botts, commissioner of Maryland's Department Occupational and Professional Licensing, administered the oath to the new CPAs on behalf of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.
The oath, outgoing MACPA Chair Tom Foard told the new CPAs, "demonstrates that you have an obligation to protect the public interest and adhere to our code of conduct and the laws and regulations promulgated by the state of Maryland."
It also is a reminder of the trust the public places in CPAs -- and the responsibility that accompanies that trust.
"The public has a great deal of trust in us," said Ian Dingwall, chief accountant of the U.S. Department of Labor and guest speaker at the event. "This is a trust that has been earned. Each and every one of us is responsible for making sure that trust lives on."
