RERF seeks volunteer supervisor
Posted April 1, 1008
The U.S. Department of Energy is looking for candidates for possible nomination to the post of U.S. supervisor of the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF). The Department of Energy, along with the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, is responsible for funding and managing RERF. RERF studies health effects in the survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Detailed information on RERF can be found on its Web site.
The U.S. supervisor reviews, on an annual basis, the financial statements of account and the reports of activities of the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF). According to Article 59 of the Civil Code of Japan, the supervisor or auditor-secretary of an organization should review the status of the finances of the juridical person (RERF) and, in general, supervise the status of the execution of the business by the directors. The RERF supervisors submit an anual report at the Board of Directors meeting. These duties require that the supervisor have a strong accounting and financial background.
The candidate should have a commitment to become knowledgeable about the programs and business practices of RERF and be effective in dealing with Japanese officials at RERF, with the Japanese supervisor, and with government officials. Once approved by the RERF Board of Directors, the term of office is four years, renewable.
This is a non-paid position and may be suitable for a U.S. citizen living either in Japan or the U.S., e.g., a retired government employee, who has a strong interest in Japan-America collaborations. The candidate should be willing to travel to Hiroshima or other cities in Japan up to three times per year. Travel costs and per diem are reimbursed by RERF.
Please send questions, expressions of interest, and resumes to Dr. Joseph Weiss at joseph.weiss@hq.doe.gov.
