New CPAs take oath to protect public

Groundbreaking ceremony to become annual event for new licensees

The CPA oath

“I solemnly swear that I will assume the responsibilities and obligations as a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Maryland and in the United States of America.

“I will support the laws and regulations and perform my professional duties to the best of my ability in an ethical, professional and objective manner.

“As a CPA, I will uphold the honor and dignity of the accounting profession and abide by the rules of professional conduct.”

On Sept. 24, nearly 40 new CPAs took part in an inaugural swearing-in ceremony that will become an annual event for newly licensed CPAs in Maryland. The oath was administered by Thomas E. Perez, secretary of Maryland ’s Department of Labor Licensing and Regulation. [Watch video of Perez speech]. This event was partly inspired by feedback from MACPA members who wanted to see new CPAs receive recognition for their hard work and perseverance.

Joining these new CPAs to mark the occasion were managing partners from their respective firms, family and friends. [Watch video of Art Flach's recount of how he found out he passed the CPA exam.] This type of recognition echoed several strategies regarding talent retention that were discussed earlier in the day at a Talent Management Forum given by Mark Koziel. This class received an overall rating of 4.7 out of 5 and garnered remarks such as, “A good holistic view of how to obtain and retain staff” and “Encouraging licensure [of our staff CPAs] reinforces their commitment to self-improvement as well as the public accounting profession.”

Congratulations to the new CPAs!
