Members of the MACPA’s Accounting Education and Career Task Force received an AAA rating for their presentation at the American Accounting Association’s annual conference in Chicago in August.

Don Butt of Mount St. Mary’s University, Lisa Cines of Aronson and Company, Jeff Lawson of Stoy, Malone and Company, and Bruce Lubich of the University of Maryland University College garnered glowing comments from an audience of  accounting educators.

The quartet presented an overview of the task force’s rationale, methodology, findings and recommendations. Its report, “State Societies and Academia: Working Together to Attract the Best and Brightest,” hit home to an audience eager for fresh perspectives on all the topics the task force has addressed head-on: Bridging the traditional gaps between educators and employers; increasing student interest and retention; and addressing such issues as staff shortages, the 150-hour rule, updating the curriculum, and the challenge of teaching and managing Generation Y students. A professor from Seton Hall University declared the panel and its work "phenomenal."

The enthusiastic reception again reaffirmed the validity and necessity of this effort. There should be considerable demand for the group’s report, which should appear in the first quarter of 2008. Between now and then, the task force will regather to further discuss and assign more of the research into best practices and the feasibility of some of its other recommendations. As last year, the task force’s update will once again be a highlight of the Jan. 4 MACPA Educators’ Conference.

The progress of the task force has been chronicled in the January /  February, March / April and May / June issues of The Statement.  To see the roster of the 20 task force members — drawn from public, industry, academia and government — go to www.macpa.org/educate.
