Meet the 2007-08 MACPA board

The MACPA’s 2007-08 slate of officers and directors was voted into place at the association’s Annual Meeting, held June 18 in Columbia. Here’s a closer look at this year’s Board of Directors.

Chair

Thomas D. Foard, CPA
Executive vice president / chief financial officer, Publishers Circulation Fulfillment

Notable: An MACPA member since 1991. Serves on the AICPA’s Business and Industry Executive Committee and Financial Executives International’s Committee on Private Companies. Has served as chair of the MACPA’s Business and Industry Committee and on various task forces from time to time for both the AICPA and the MACPA. A discussion leader for professional development programs offered by the AICPA and the MACPA’s Business Learning Institute, addressing topics focused on financial concepts related to business management.

Arthur E. Flach, CPA

Notable: An MACPA member since 1981. A member of the MACPA’s Legislative Strategy Committee and Legislative Executive Committee. A former member of the MACPA’s Public Relations Committee, the Estate, Gift and Estate Planning Committee and the Accounting Reform Implementation Task Force, which implemented recommendations found in the MACPA’s white paper on accounting reform. Has frequently testified before the Maryland House of Delegates and the Maryland Senate on issues affecting the profession.

Notable: A MACPA member since 1976. Former member of the MACPA's Accounting Reform Implementation Task Force and the Section 404 Strike Force. Secretary / treasurer of the MACPA. Member of the AICPA Council and the AICPA's Virtual Grassroots Panel.  Secretary / treasurer of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce, Wake Forest University's Calloway School of Business Board of Visitors, Villa Julie College Board of Trustees, Georgetown University's Business School Mentor's Program, the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGE’s) and the Center Club's Membership Committee.

Member of the MACPA's New/Young Professionals Network. Member of the AICPA's Virtual Grassroots Panel (previously known as the "Group of 100"). Member of Towson University's Accounting Advisory Board, Recipient of 2007 Outstanding Accounting Alumni Award. Selected as one of the Baltimore Business Journal's "40 under 40" successful businesspeople.

Notable: An MACPA member since 2003. Chair of the MACPA’s Legislative Committee. Member of the MACPA’s Political Action Committee and Education and Career Task Force. Also a member of the AICPA, the District of Columbia Institute of CPAs, the New York Society of CPAs and Financial Executives International. A frequent speaker on accounting and taxation matters. Frequently writes articles on accounting, taxation of management issues of interest to clients. Member of the boards of directors of the Ethics Resource Center, the Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce, the Create Expressive Arts Center and the National Academy of Photography.


Michelle Duffy Orr, CPA

Notable: An MACPA member since 1986. Has served as an MACPA Political Action Committee trustee since 1999. A member of Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.’s Finance Committee. Served as a delegate to the 2000 Republican National Convention. Former vice chair of the Maryland Republican Party. Treasurer of the Maryland Women's Heritage Center.

 

Kimberly N. Ellison-Taylor, CPA
North American director, Oracle USA’s Public Sector, Oracle Corporation

Notable: An MACPA member since 2000. A member of the MACPA’s Technology Committee and the New / Young Professionals Network. Prior to joining Oracle, served as chief information technology officer for Prince George’s County, as a manager in KPMG’s Information Risk Management practice, and with Motorola’s U.S. Federal Market’s Division as a systems integration program manager. Began her career at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, where she served in numerous leadership roles. Speaks at local schools as part of the MACPA’s Career Awareness Program. Recipient of one of InfoWorld's 25 “CTO of the Year” awards for 2004.

 

Mitchell E. Gorochow, CPA
Executive managing director, Mid-Atlantic Economic Unit, RSM McGladrey

Notable: An MACPA member since 1976. Serves as a member of the Board of Directors of McGladrey & Pullen, LLP, and is leading the firm’s efforts toward cultural transformation. Formerly a member of the executive management committee of RSM McGladrey and has pioneered RSM McGladrey’s regional prominence in government contracting services. Former managing partner of the former Keller, Bruner & Company. Actively served the MACPA as a past president of the Capital Area Chapter and chair of the Ethics Committee. Has more than 30 years experience in accounting, tax and consulting services.


Jeffrey M. Lawson, CPA
Supervisor, Stoy, Malone & Company, P.C.

Notable: An MACPA member since 2001. First became active with the MACPA as a speaker with Tomorrow's CPA. Served on the AICPA’s standards-setting panel for the new CPA exam in June 2003. Past chair and founding member of the MACPA’s New / Young Professionals Network. Member of the MACPA’s Financial Literacy Advisory Council. Serves on the MACPA’s Employer / Educator Task Force.


Bruce H. Lubich, Ph.D., CPA
Graduate Accounting Program director and associate professor, University of Maryland University College

Notable: An MACPA member since 1991. Has served the MACPA as member and co-chair of Members in Education Committee, member of the Accounting Education and Career Task Force and member of the Financial Literacy Advisory Board. Has served on various American Taxation Association committees. Has consulted on accounting education for Peoples’ Republic of China and various businesses in the energy, pharmaceutical and publication sectors. As a principal in tax consulting firm, conducts research and quality assurance reviews. Has also served on several not-for-profit boards.


Kathleen Murphy
President and CEO, Maryland Bankers Association

Notable: At-large member of the MACPA's Board of Directors. Served for 13 years as director of community banking for the American Bankers Association in Washington, D.C.  Prior to joining the ABA, served as director of communications for the Ohio Bankers Association and in the Financial Card Services Division of Bank One, both located in Columbus. Among many volunteer positions, serves on the Executive Committee of the Maryland Coalition for Financial Literacy, as president of the Maryland Government Relations Association, and in various capacities with the American Bankers Association and America’s Community Bankers. 


Raymond C. Speciale, Esq., CPA
Associate professor, Mount St. Mary's University

Notable: Teaches classes in business law, tax and accounting at graduate and undergraduate levels. Operates solo legal practice with emphasis on aviation, tax and commercial law. In last four years has authored two books: Aircraft Ownership: A Legal and Tax Guide and Fundamentals of Aviation Law, both published by McGraw-Hill.
