Del Pino-Rivera captures MACPA's Public Service Award

Marianela Del Pino-Rivera, a CPA and sole practitioner based in Bowie, is the winner of the Maryland Association of CPAs' 2005 Public Service Award.

MACPA officials determined that this year's award would be presented to the CPA who had done most to advance the cause of financial literacy in Maryland. Del Pino-Rivera, who was nominated by two different organizations, has contributed significantly to the financial knowledge and well-being of her clients, her community and her fellow Hispanic citizens of Maryland.

In addition to her long-time pro bono services to individuals and clients, Del Pino-Rivera has provided free financial planning and tax assistance to such non-profit organizations as Identity, Inc., and the Kerri Ann Kattar Memorial Fund.

She is the co-founder of Learning Power, a Bowie-based non-profit providing tutoring services to at-risk young people, in collaboration with Bowie State University. As a commissioner on the Governor's Commission for Hispanic Affairs in Maryland, she has organized and spoken at community seminars on tax issues.

In her local community, Del Pino-Rivera coordinated the Choices and Challenges program at the Huntington Community Center in Bowie, where she presented workshops for young people on such topics as financial management, goal setting and other life skills. She is also a past treasurer of the Bowie Chamber of Commerce and the Bowie-Crofton Business and Professional Women's Club and a past member of the Hispanic Bar Association.

Del Pino-Rivera has actively participated in the MACPA financial literacy initiative, speaking at local high schools on the need for young people to practice the principles of sound money management.

Del Pino-Rivera, who was born in Cuba and came to this country at the age of seven, exemplifies the ability of a CPA to use her professional skills and knowledge to benefit clients and community. For more than 21 years, she has been an inspiration and an advocate to the many Latinos in her community.
