CPAs make a splash for financial literacy
Cold, steady rain doesn't dampen MACPA's annual 1040K Race
BALTIMORE — The rain was relentless, and still the runners poured into downtown Baltimore for the MACPA's third annual 1040K Race and 1040EZ Fun Walk.
Held April 30, the race featured 243 runners and walkers who joined forces to raise approximately $4,000 for Maryland Saves, a non-profit group that provides counseling, materials and workshops to assist Marylanders in managing their finances and saving for the future.
"Despite the weather, we had a good turnout. This says something about the race itself," said MACPA Chair Ed Rommel. "I did not see a single participant who wasn't smiling. It was cold and wet, but the opportunity to be with fellow CPAs in this type of venue is enjoyable."
Twenty-three year-old Derek Henry crossed the finish line first overall with a time of 17 minutes, 45 seconds. Alla Danilkovitch, 41, topped all women with a time of 21:19.
But the real winners were the Marylanders who benefit from the services provided by Maryland Saves.
"We would like to believe that our financial literacy efforts were a part of the reason for the success of the event," Rommel said. "It is great that, while doing something to benefit the underprivileged of our area, we could have such a good time."
American Express Tax and Business Services earned the "largest team" award by sending 30 people to participate.
