Tips for job hunters

Being hired for a job is not always an easy task, but with some hard work and perseverance you should be able to land a good one. Remember that not everyone can have a dream job directly out of college. You have been told that everyone has to pay their dues and in most cases it is true. But since accounting is one of the most lucrative and versatile fields, you should be on your way to a great job in no time.

Finding a job

  1. Research: Begin your search by doing some research and personal reflection. Make a list of the types of companies you would like to work for including specific examples. This way you can always reflect on what values are important to you.

If you are unsure which accounting career direction to take, conduct some informational interviews. Pick individuals who are responsible for hiring at their company and ask to speak with them to get more information. Remember even though this is not a job interview, be sure to make a good impression.

Visit your school's career center. The career counselors are an invaluable source for advice, job leads and education.
  2. Organize: Keep a folder or list of all employers with whom you have contact, from those to whom you sent a resume to those who invited you for an interview.
  3. Network: Be sure to make it known that you are actively looking for a job. Tell your friends, your family and even casual acquaintences. You never know who has connections to the business at which you would like to work.
  4. Start searching: There are many resources for jobs. Listed are just a few of the many possibilities:
  • Print media — newspapers, magazines
  • Internet — company Web sites, job sites
  • College alumni — your career center should have a list
  • College career center lists
  • Recruiting agency
  • Job fairs — hosted by your college or local businesses
  • Online classifieds on the MACPA's Web site.
