Work experience

To be a CPA in Maryland, you must have some real-world practical work experience. You have several options in the type of accounting duties you perform and where you choose to work, but remember an actively licensed CPA must verify the work experience.

How much experience do I need?

Candidates applying for an initial license must have one year (2,000 hours) of practical work experience to be completed in not more than three years and not less than one year.

What qualifies as practical work experience?

The State Board of Public Accountancy defines practical work experience as work which "includes providing any type of service or advice involving the use of accounting, attest, management advisory, financial advisory, tax, or consulting skills." Such practical work experience may be obtained through employment in government, industry, academia or public practice.

IMPORTANT: An actively licensed CPA must verify the work experience.

How do I document my work experience?

You must submit a "Report of Practical Work Experience" form. This form is available online. You also may call the State Board at (410) 230-6258 to request a copy.
